Hey there, fellow professor! It’s 2026, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses remains one of my absolute favorite Switch games. I still remember the first big decision: picking a house. I went with the Black Eagles. Edelgard, Hubert, and the rest pulled me in with their sharp aesthetics and even sharper magical talents. But once the battles got tougher, I quickly realized the Black Eagles have some glaring holes – namely, a lack of bulky frontline units and physical punch.
That’s where recruiting students from the other houses comes in. Over countless playthroughs (and with help from some excellent guides), I’ve nailed down the best recruits to shore up the Eagles’ weaknesses. Whether you’re starting fresh in 2026 or revisiting Fódlan, these six students will turn your Black Eagles class into an unstoppable force.

Lysithea – The Glass Cannon You Can’t Skip
Yes, I’m recommending another mage for a house already stacked with magical firepower. But Lysithea from the Golden Deer is simply that incredible. In my Black Eagles runs, she consistently outperformed everyone else in raw damage output. Her growth rates of 60% in both Magic and Dexterity are absurd, and she learns spells like Luna and Dark Spikes that delete enemy cavalry and armored units. She even gets the Mastermind ability, doubling her skill experience per combat – so she’ll master Reason and Faith faster than anyone. The only downside is her tissue-paper physical bulk, but honestly, if you position her carefully, nothing will survive long enough to touch her.
Recruitment basics: You need 15 Magic and a B in Faith, but boosting your support rank with her drastically lowers these requirements. At B support, you only need 6 Magic and a D+ in Faith. I always spam her with gifts and tea parties to hit B support early.

Leonie – The Tank Archer We Desperately Need
Physical defense is the Black Eagles’ biggest headache, and Leonie from the Golden Deer fixes that beautifully. She has solid growths in Strength (40%), Dexterity (55%), and Speed (60%), turning her into a deceptively durable archer. What really sold me, though, is her personal ability Rivalry: when adjacent to a male ally, she deals 2 extra damage and takes 2 less. Pair her with a male frontliner like Sylvain or Ferdinand, and she becomes a reliable off-tank who can also snipe from range. I usually push her into the Bow Knight class for maximum mobility and firing power.
Recruitment basics: Without any support, you need 15 Strength and a C in Lances. Raise her support to B, and the Strength requirement drops to just 6 with a D+ Lance rank. I often gift her fishing floats and have a few meals to get that support up fast.

Felix – The Lone Wolf Who Carries the Frontline
Felix from the Blue Lions is my favorite physical attacker for any route. With 55% Speed and 50% Strength growths, he slices through enemies like a hot knife through butter. His personal skill, Lone Wolf, gives +5 damage when his battalion endurance is zero or when he’s alone – perfect for a solo flanker or if you like to play aggressively without micromanaging gambits. The Black Eagles lack a reliable swordmaster who can also double most foes, and Felix fills that gap spectacularly. I usually keep him as a Mortal Savant or Swordmaster.
Recruitment basics: He’s one of the harder recruits, demanding 15 Speed and a B+ in Swords with no support. Get him to B support, and you’ll only need 6 Speed and a C in Swords. I always train Byleth’s sword skill while showering Felix with hunting daggers and meat.

Ingrid – The Flying Ace Who Liberates Petra
Ingrid is another Blue Lions gem who fits perfectly into the Black Eagles. As a natural Pegasus Knight, she brings high mobility, decent magical resistance, and a solid sword hand. Her 55% Speed growth ensures she’ll double almost everything. Better yet, recruiting Ingrid frees up Petra to try other classes like Assassin or Wyvern Lord, adding even more flexibility to your team. I love using Ingrid as a dodge tank – give her an evasion ring and watch her twirl out of harm’s way.
Recruitment basics: She wants 15 Dexterity and a D+ in Flying without support. With B support, it’s only 6 Dexterity and an E+ Flying. Easy to achieve by using faculty training for Flying and gifting her Smoked Meat or Riding Boots.

Raphael – The Buff Tank We Should’ve Had from the Start
The Black Eagles seriously miss a true heavy armor unit, and Raphael from the Golden Deer is the perfect fix. His sky-high HP and Strength growths let him shrug off blows while dishing out devastating axe and gauntlet hits. He’s also an ideal buddy for Caspar or Bernadetta as a brawler. What’s even better is that if you reach a B support with him, he’ll join your class for free, completely ignoring stat and skill requirements. That alone makes him a no-brainer pickup.
Recruitment basics: Without support, you need 20 Strength and a C in Heavy Armor. At B support, those numbers become 8 Strength and a D+ Heavy Armor. I recommend stacking meals and choir practice with him early on.

Sylvain – The Flirtatious Cavalier Who Synergizes Perfectly
Sylvain from the Blue Lions rounds out my must-have list for two reasons. First, his personal synergy with Leonie – her Rivalry ability works whenever she’s next to a male ally, and Sylvain makes a great front-line partner as a Paladin. Second, if you’re playing as female Byleth, you can recruit him for literally zero effort as early as chapter two; he’ll just ask to join. Even with male Byleth, his Reason and Charm requirements aren’t too steep once you gain some support. He fills the role of a mobile lancer who can take a hit and deal respectable damage.
Recruitment basics: Female Byleth gets him automatically. Male Byleth needs 25 Charm and a C in Reason with no support; at B support, it drops to 10 Charm and a D+ Reason. Give him a board game or some flowers and watch him melt.

Final Thoughts
By 2026, Three Houses has become a timeless classic, and optimizing the Black Eagles route is still a rewarding puzzle. These six recruits – Lysithea, Leonie, Felix, Ingrid, Raphael, and Sylvain – completely transform the house from a fragile magic squad into a well-balanced army. Each one patches a specific weakness while adding a ton of personality. So go ahead, start those tea parties, cram those gifts, and build your dream class. Fódlan awaits!
